Chihuahua
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have been around dogs all my life, but recently adopted a Chihuahua. All the other dogs were big mutts and German Shepards…This little guy is as sweet as he can be, but this book has helped a lot to understand him. Dogs are not dogs, little bitty dogs are different.
Both of us are getting lots of value from this practical dog training book. If you have a little sprite like mine, get this book.

I was thinking of getting a small dog and decided to read this book for information. I’ve had larger dogs in my life, so it was nice to get some ideas from a small dog perspective. This book was worth getting!

My seven pound Pomeranian heartily recommends this book for all small dog owners. Very useful advice, clear directions and humorous ways to see the world as a little dog sees it. I will always think of myself as an eight story building now!

My husband and I have always owned medium sized dogs. When we purchased our Chihuahuas we looked for books on small dogs and found this one. It was perfect! There are a lot of good tips and tricks on training little dogs. Our Chiahuahuas are now well behaved little dogs. No armpit piranhas!!
Highly Recommened!

I recommend this book for first time owners of small dogs or dogs in general. I have a 3 lb chihuahua and it has helped me socialize her (being “brave”), learn tricks such as sit, stay, lay down, stop her excessive barking, and being possessive of me. I always recommend this book whenever I go to the dog park. Great book!
Things you do not think about are in this wonderful book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was very surprised that there are training differences and ways to think about dogs and training not addressed in other books. I thought I knew it all. I was wrong. She makes you think about size and how a small dog learns etc. I thought I could guess them, I was wrong. These are things I have never thought of before. I have always had larger dogs. This is a must get book for dogs under 20 lbs or 12″. It is the best dog book I have ever purchased. I do not say this lightly. A must have book.
Very helpful and fun to read.

I enjoy this book for it’s ease in reading and for the wealth of information that it has given me and my pint size babe. I think that you shouldn’t have to struggle to understand a hard-read as you learn how to care for your dogie and that the tricks and hints of taking care of your little one are very helpful.
Great book for anyone with a little dog

Easy to read and packed with practical training and management advice specifically for those with little dogs. An antidote to the all-too-often owner-induced obnoxious “elbow” dogs. Wood clearly loves these little pooches, but has no illusions about the behavioral challenges that can lead to problems when people don’t understand that these are living, breathing, thinking animals–not fashion accessories or surrogate children. I’m teaching a Small Dog Manners class–I intend to make this book required reading.

This book like little dogs, Happy, Fun, and full of good humored ATTITUDE.I like to give this as a ‘new puppy’ or ‘newly rescued’ gift, especially to big dog people getting their 1st experience w/ the smaller cousins. Ms. Woods book has lots of great ideas for care, training and even game playing w/ the little guys. I love this book…you’ll read it w/ a smile!!
Wonderful tips for training!

Informative and Fun Read
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s informative in a fun way. I especially like the quips and pull-out stories throughout the book that provide real-life examples and stories about training. Although it’s still a few more weeks until my fur-baby comes home to live with me, reading this book has made me excited and confident about my ability to train her, which I’m sure we’ll both appreciate in the long-run.
Wow — all those 5 star reviews are true!

I thought I knew alot about dogs, but my dogs had always been medium or large dogs — I learned so much about the needs of small dogs and how to handle them a little differently — get this book BEFORE you get a small dog.
Great book!

Pint Sized Book; Tons of Information
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this book a few weeks ago when I adopted my new puppy, a Jack Russell Terrier – Chihuahua mix. I never owned a small dog before so I was intimidated about training and dealing with such a little animal. Deborah Wood’s book has been a blessing and her explanations into small dog behavior are a real eye opener to what it’s like to be so tiny in such a big world. The writing style of the book is entertaining and using her easy-to-understand techniques has made training a breeze. I’ve already taught my 2 month old pup to sit, lay down, come, and stay and we’re already working on leash training! I highly recommend this book to guide a new dog owner through that difficult training period with their new furry friend.
Great book for us who have the “little ones.”

I have a 6 pound Morkie and was frustrated with the training books I had read as they are geared toward the bigger dogs. Our little ones need different options as they have more obstacles to over come. This book is great for their point of view.

Found it easy to read and understand. Agreed with the training methods. Even gave the book as a gift, to one of my Papillon buyers.
The best training book for little dogs
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My toy poodle is my first dog (although I had dogs growing up, they were never *my* responsibility, heh.) This book has been an invaluable training tool. It even had a solution for his incessant barking. He was worse than a car alarm. Anytime there was a noise, he’d go off. But the book gave multiple suggestions on stopping this. It took less than 2 weeks to train the alarm-barking out of him. I’m shocked. And all of the techniques are so gentle. I am able to use my soft-speaking voice and he listens. No yelling. No yanking on his leash. No forceful grabbing that could injure his tiny body. One thing, I did put him through a puppy training class, mostly for me to learn training techniques. It made this book easier to follow.
Little Dogs is a FABULOUS Book

Little Dogs: Training Your Pint-Sized Companion
This is a great book. I highly recommend it for anyone with a small dog. I have a number of other dog training books, but this book does provide an important perspective on training small dogs.
Not very detailed
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I have a 4 month old Papillon and I had VERY high hopes for this book. Unfortunately all the information in this book is very basic and will not necessarily work for every dog. The author did a poor job of expanding topics, especially housetraining…very poor. She teaches readers the “watch me” but my puppy has no interest in following treats, has no interest in sitting…holding the treat over the dog’s nose has not worked once. I just wish this book had more information than it does and frankly I am very surprised it has received such high reviews.
Little book to train little dogs
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I recently read the book: “Little Dogs: Training Your Pint-Sized Companion” by Deborah Wood.
I really liked and enjoyed this book. It is about 130 pages long and is an easy read. But she shares a lot of tips on how to train your toy breed dog and shares some insight into how these little dogs think.
This book is all about training your dog to be a better companion and a good dog that people will enjoy being around. It includes a brief section on house training and other problem issues. It also discusses the basic commands that we should teach our dogs so that they behave and to protect them from possible harm that could happen if they do not respond to your commands.
The book is sometimes humorous and tries to get you thinking what it’s like from the dog’s point of view and what the dog actually hears when you say something.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has recently adopted a new puppy or even an older small breed dog. This book is for someone who is not interested in getting into performance events, but wants a well trained dog. However, it can get you thinking that, if you can train your small dog beginning obedience, perhaps you can go on to compete in other dog activities such as Rally, Obedience and/or Agility.

Excellent training manual!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I thought this book was an excellent training manual for my 2 yorkies. Gives you insight into the dogs’ perceptions of the world, and offers great advice on training your little dogs. When I trained my first yorkie, I tabbed certain “tricks” and wrote an index in the back to give me a quick reference point…. Came in very handy when training my second yorkie. I liked this book so much I purchased 1 for my mom, who has chihuahuas.
