101 Dog Tricks is the largest trick book on the market and the only one presenting full-color photos of each trick and its training steps? The step-by-step approach, difficulty rating, and prerequisites, allow readers to start training immediately. Tips and trouble-shooting boxes cover common problems, while build-on ideas suggest more complicated tricks which build on each new skill. No special tools (such as clickers) or knowledge of specific training methods are required. Trick training is a great way to bond with your dog and help him integrate into your family. It keeps him mentally and physically challenged and helps to establish paths of communication between you. Many tricks build skills needed for common dog sports, dog dancing, and dog therapy work. It’s every dog lover’s privilege that Kyra and Chalcy took time from their performing schedule to share their secrets in 101 Dog Tricks.

Needs easier tricks and some for small dogs!
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Wish I had the opportunity to look at the book before putting it on my wish list. Most of the tricks are classified as advanced and expert. Also a large number of the tricks are geared toward large dogs. I don’t see my miniature schnauzer oppening the fridge to get me a drink from the top shelf. I don’t see more than 6-10 possible tricks here for us (other than the agility stuff my dog already does).

Love the book

Love the book, the pictures are great. I am not sure how well my dog will learn these but it wont be for lack of good instructions from the book.

Excellent Dog Trick book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Very well written descriptions on how to teach your dog how to do tricks. The book even contains a trouble shooting guide for each trick. Most tricks have a “build on it” which allows your dog to use part of an old trick to do a new one. Great book.

Well organized with great content

I have gotten a lot of use out of this book. It is arranged in a way that makes individual tricks easy to follow. My dogs have learned some of the tricks already and I look forward to teaching them several more.

Great job!

Best Dog Trick Book Ever
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m so into this book! Beautifully designed, photographed and written, 101 Dog Tricks is perfect for me and my 5-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. Since he was six weeks old, Rocket has been getting by on his cuteness (and very well, I might add). In addition to being physically energetic, he has an active mind and gets bored easily. Kyra Sundance and Chalcy’s wonderful book has given him some fun mental challenges and, as the subtitle says, created a greater bond between us. I highly recommend this book!

Nice gift for the new dog owner.

We enjoyed going through this book after my daughter and her boyfriend got their first puppy. Had some good tricks for most dogs. Other tricks were for bigger dogs which probably won’t work for their small puppy. Overall, a cute, fun book for dog lovers.

It works!

I had already taken a basic obedience class with my dog where we learned simple commands like sit, stay, down, leave it, and come. I used this book to teach my dog other tricks, and I found it very easy to use. My dog was able to learn a new trick in just a short amount of time in one day. I would recommend this to any dog owner wanting to teach their dog new tricks. It really does help you bond with your dog, and they love to learn!

Best training book out there (for me and my dog)
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I started working with my dog two days ago, using this book. I love it and so, it seems, does my dog. I had tried unsuccessfully to teach her some tricks, but soon just lost interest. Within minutes of using the techniques in this book, I saw progress. She’s already rolling over on her own, with a lure (treat), granted, but that is the successful first step. I expect in a few weeks, she will be doing it on command. We are also working on peek-a-boo and a few others, with great success. I also like that the author includes the training steps for agility, disc dogging, and dog dancing. What fun!101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog

We can do this!

Gus and I love this book. It is logical and full of common sense tips for working (and playing) with your dog. The photos make the steps very clear. We can learn from this and have fun doing it.

You won’t want to put it on the shelf!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I thought for $12 it would be worthwhile to have… but this book exceeded my expectations. It is so well thought out, any person with a dog should have a copy. The how-to for each trick is written in clear and to the point language, and the visual aides are phenomenal. Each how-to includes difficulty level, quick tips to troubleshoot any problems teaching the trick, and also directions specific to the size of dog you have. It’s a great way to bond with your dog, but remember all dogs will learn at different speeds so you must be patient and keep the lessons short. You may not teach your dog all of these, but there is something for everyone!

It doesn’t get much clearer than this

This book is very clear written with lots of pictures to demenstrate. And it also has trouble shooting for each trick. My two dogs and I have had a lot of fun with this and I actually bought a copy for my sister and her dog.

Easy to follow instructions — even for beginners
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I used this book for training my standard schnauzer. In addition to tricks, such as rollover, crawl, play dead . . . , it also has all the basic commands, including sit, stay, wait, come, etc. The step-by-step guide to teaching includes both written and pictorial instructions that are easy to follow. Fun book!

Amazing Training Book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an amazing book. I am a beginner dog trainer and when I ordered it I was most concerned about how the author actually went about training, whether it was about positive reinforcement or what. I was extremely pleased to find that not only does the book concentrate completely on positive reinforcement, but it builds up complicated tricks very gradually. Besides making the training process faster and easier, it helps to make sure the dog truly understands what you’re asking them to do – rather than guess and check.

The book is also full of helpful tips on every page, and most tricks come with a “build on it” section. This means building on a trick like “fetch.” After your dog consistently performs “fetch”, there is a “build on it” option that allows further training your dog to fetch specific items, such as “fetch keys.” This is great for both dog and trainer to gradually move from beginning to more advanced tricks.

For most tricks there is also a “common problems” section. This is great because it can help you anticipate problems AND fix problems that do come up. Most of them were spot on and my dog had problems in the exact area that the book mentions. In other cases, what my dog did was similar to the common problems so I could adjust the solution to my needs.

On top of all this, there are two indexes in the back of the book. One has the tricks organized by training level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) while the other is organized by sport/activity (agility, performing on stage, obedience). Both of these were very helpful to me.

Not so much for small dogs
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was very excited to get this book to find more unique tricks to teach my yorkie, who already knows the basics. This book is packed with fun tricks you’d likely never think of, and I like the pictures and detailed step by step directions to teaching them. It also tells you the difficulty, prerequisites, and troubleshooting for each trick.

However, I was a little disappointed that many of the tricks presented would be very difficult or impossible for small dogs. My yorkie is about 6 inches tall and weighs 4 pounds. She’s not going to be fetching beers from the fridge (or answer the phone, or turn of the lights, etc). There are also a lot of tricks requiring props. There are simply many tricks in here that either wouldn’t work for my small dog, or that I wouldn’t even want to teach in the first place.

However, that being said, if you have a small dog and need help teaching simpler tricks (sit, shake, take a bow, etc.), this book would be handy. For some tricks it does also specify how to teach to small dogs and how to teach to large dogs.

Overall I say: buy it. But don’t expect your dog is going to learn all 101 tricks (or even be able to).

Great Dog Trick Book
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
If you’re bored with having your dog do the same old tricks and eager for something new, 1001 Dog Tricks is a great resource for adding some new tricks to your repertoire. Each trick is demonstrated with wonderful photos that make each step clear. Tricks for smaller breeds are also included. Unfortunately, a number of the tricks are slight variations on the same basic trick, but there are still dozens of unique tricks to keep you and your dog entertained for a long time. Dawn A. Excellent book!

Some of the tricks really amazes me. I never knew you could teach your dog to do that (such as holding your bag, turning off the light switch). That’s pretty awesome. Also what’s good about this is that they will show you step by step in the book. That was very helpful.

Outstanding!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As the owner of a professional pet-sitting and dog-walking business in Michigan, USA, I’m always seeking new ways to engage, positively challenge, and bond with my pet clients. Our winter season is long, and we have many rainy days throughout the year. When the weather is inappropriate for walking dogs, I turn to the pages of 101 Dog Tricks, by Kyra Sundance and Chalcy. This step-by-step book offers marvelous ways to spend quality time indoors with dogs of all ages! Training is a fun way to stimulate a dog’s mind, senses and physical skills. And this book shows the reader how to play with your dog using positive training methods accompanied by fantastic photographs. This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in helping integrate a dog into your family, and keep her mentally and physically challenged. The rewards are invaluable! Fun for you and your dog
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book has lots of fun ideas of things to teach your dog. The tricks range from easy to hard. The instructions aren’t always the clearest on how to shape your dog’s behavior. However, if you’ve had any success in teaching your dogs tricks or even basic obedience, you’ll be able to figure out how to train your dog on the activities in this book.

Repetition is the Key
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I thought this was an excellent resource. I like the idea of starting out each exercise by using treats. The pictures and directions are clear-cut, the discipline addressed is not inhumane–only attention-getting if administered lightly and correctly; and the book was organized into sections so that I could pick what group of tricks interested me the most. As with any dog, the real “trick” is repeating the actions enough times consistently for the trick to “sink in” and become a habit. That part is up to the owner!
