It is essential that you do not rush the bitch as soon as you see the colored discharge due to the very fact of the animal being too immature.  The reason for this, is that all of the bitch’s nutrition will be transferred in to the puppies thereby leaving her week and feeble. The bigger breeds however take a minimum of 1 to 2½ to reach the ideal dog breeding age.  In other words the smaller breeds may be allowed to conceive during the 2nd heat while the larger breeds should wait until their 3rd to 4th heat period in order to be at the ideal dog breeding age.

A premature birth could cause problems to a smaller breed mother since due to the over weighed puppy. Dogs such as Bullmastiffs, Terranovas, Masteens and St. Bernards should be kept for more than two years before they are bred since due to the size of the dogs .
